Boycotting is the most effective opposition to loud commercials
Regarding the letter that appeared in The Sun on Dec. 12, I have this to say: Regardless who the engineers are, they still are responsible for ear-splitting commercials.
My letter was to complain about the loud commercials. Now that the letter enlightened us as to whom we should complain, I'm sure many of us will complain to ABC.
But I still believe boycotting is more effective than more complaining. I do wish we had TVs where the TV viewer could set the volume and never worry about ear-splitting commercials.

Computer equipment needs highly rated surge protectors
The recent blackout in San Francisco brings to mind an experience a few of my neighbors and I had some months ago. Suddenly, on a quiet afternoon, our electric lights began to flicker and slowly the power faded. After the power was restored I had lost all the electrical appliances, TV, VCRs, computer and printers--that in spite of the fact that I had a surge protector which I thought would protect my computer equipment in case of a power surge.
I consulted an electrical contractor who informed me my surge protector's rating was too low. The remedy was to install an industrial-grade surge protector by the electrical meter, and for further protection, I could have a more highly rated surge protector connected directly to my computer equipment.
I took this advice. I wish to share with the readers of this newspaper my experience with a power surge I thought would never happen to me, so they may take the necessary precautions to protect against a similar predicament.
