Maihack, Silverman share top award

Colvin is the top female athlete at Homestead

(By Dick Sparrer)

There's no tying in baseball. Well, that's not necessarily true, and Homestead baseball players Brian Maihack and Bryan Silverman proved it last week when they shared the honor of "Mustang of the Year" at the school's senior awards night. Maihack and Silverman tied for the school's prestigious award given for athletic excellence for boys, and two-sport sensation Julie Colvin won the award outright for girls.

The awards are presented annually to Homestead seniors based on "athletic performance, leadership, hard work, determination, scholastic performance and overall contribution to the athletic program," according to criteria set down by the school's athletic department and athletic boosters.

Maihack was a three-sport star for the Mustangs, playing football, soccer and baseball and winning all-league honors in each one. Silverman played baseball and basketball for Homestead, and was an all-leaguer in both sports. It's the first time in school history that two athletes shared the award.

Colvin starred for Homestead in softball and volleyball during her four years as a Mustang, winning various all-league spots. Charlie Bostic, head football coach and boys athletic director, presented the awards to Maihack and Silverman at the school's senior awards night on May 29. Girls athletic director Paula Weismann presented Colvin with her award.

In addition to winning all-league honors in three sports, Maihack was named the most inspirational player on the soccer team and was selected to play in the first annual senior all-star soccer game at the season's end.

Maihack also claimed three academic student athlete awards this year, given to students to maintain a minimum 3.2 or higher grade point average during each sports season.

Maihack, a shortstop on the baseball team, will pursue a baseball career at the collegiate level when he attends Arizona State University in the fall. Silverman starred opposite Maihack on the Homestead infield as the squad's second baseman. The two will play those positions when they compete together this year on a summer league team.

Like Maihack, Silverman earned scholar-athlete recognition during his two sports seasons, and he too made an all-star team. Silverman was invited to play for the North team in the senior all-star game, and ripped two hits in the third game of the series.

Silverman plans to continue playing baseball as he moves on to UC-San Diego. Colvin, like her male counterparts, was also a recognized scholar-athlete during both her senior sports seasons. Through her four years as a Homestead athlete, she received several all-league awards.

Colvin plans to attend UC-Santa Barbara in the fall.
