Fremont's Lesui makes all-league team

(By Dick Sparrer)

The Los Gatos and Homestead boys volleyball teams dominated the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) in both varsity and junior varsity competition this spring.

So it came as little surprise to see the Wildcats and Mustangs dominate the all-league teams when the coaches of the SCVAL converged to pick the best players for the 2002 season.

Los Gatos topped each squad by claiming the most valuable player awards, then put two players on each of the first teams and one on each of the second teams.

Homestead was close behind with three players honored on each list, and Fremont finished with two players on each squad. The numbers followed the order of finish in each league race this spring.

The Los Gatos boys put together a 12-0 season to win the varsity championship this year. The Wildcats went on to advance to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Homestead was second in varsity action at 10-2, with Fremont third at 8-4. Gatos senior setter Michael Conry was named the MVP on the varsity squad after putting up some very impressive assist numbers in the championship season.

Junior opposite hitter Shaun Sullivan and senior swing hitter Max Haueter, the two kill leaders for the Cats this year, were named to the all-league first team. Sophomore middle blocker Fletcher Anderson claimed a spot on the second team.

Homestead was led the spring by senior setter Nick Miluso and senior swing Josh Cavin, who both won first-team berths. Junior middle blocker Alex Hiraki was picked to the second team.

Junior swing Lance Lesui of Fremont was a first-team pick. Lesui was the kill leader for the Firebirds this season. Teammate Adam Colombo, a senior setter, was tabbed to the second team.

Senior swing Justin Zebb of Saratoga rounded out the all-SCVAL first team. Others claiming second-team spots were Justin Mambaje, a senior setter from Santa Clara; Matt Ronconi, a junior opposite from Mountain View; and Jerome Ibesie, a senior swing from Wilcox.

In JV play, Keith Catanese of Los Gatos was named the most valuable player after leading the Wildcats to a 10-0 season and the league championship.

Catanese, a sophomore swing, was joined on the all-league team by Gatos sophomores Casey Pfeifer, Michael Robards and Jesse Barron.

Pfeifer, a setter, and Robards, a swing, were named to the first team, and Barron, a setter, was picked to the second team. Junior swing Ed Wang and sophomore opposite A.J. Lee were Homestead players on the first team. Junior swing Sean Chen won a second-team berth.

Sophomore swing Andrew Fallon of Fremont was named to the first team, and soph swing Kevin La won a second-team spot.

Freshman setter B.J. Dericco of Wilcox rounded out the first team, and others making the second team included Ali Naqui, a junior middle from Saratoga; Skyler Reeves, a freshman swing from Mountain View; and Aaron Thompson of Wilcox.

Los Gatos posted a 10-0 record to win the JV division, with Homestead second at 7-3 and Fremont third at 6-4.
