City rezones 25 neighborhood lots

On June 11, the Sunnyvale City Council unanimously approved resident Allen Bertke's application to rezone 25 parcels of land bounded by Bobolink Circle and Bobwhite Avenue from an R-0 (low-density residential zoning district) to R-0/S (low-density residential/single-story combining district).

Bertke said that the area is made up of single-family homes, more than 75 percent of which are single-story structures. And neighborhood residents, including him, would like to keep it that way, he said.

"The two main issues here are privacy and property value," Bertke said. Bertke, along with other residents, requested council members to pass the ordinance, which would restrict the area to single-story homes and not allow area homeowners to add second stories to their homes. If homeowners did so, they would be able to look directly down into their next-door neighbors' windows from their second-story rooms, residents said at the meeting.

This is the second such application in Sunnyvale. In July 2001, the city council approved the first application for a district of 54 Eichler homes on Wright Avenue, Edmonton Avenue and La Salle Drive.

"Providing this type of zoning allows the neighborhood to decide for itself what type of homes it wantsÑat least, for the next seven years," Councilman Jack Walker said.
