Canary Avenue decision sets dangerous precedent On June 11, the city council took the precedent-setting action of approving Canary Avenue traffic-calming measures, with the goal of slowing down neighborhood and cut-through traffic. This was an action that I totally endorse. Tests have demonstrated that a simple, low-cost speed hump (not bump) is an effective way of slowing down the neighborhood traffic. Unfortunately, council members chose the high-price option, which included a planter in the middle of the street that included landscaping requiring periodic maintenance and water. That brings the total estimated cost for installation to $60,000 and the yearly maintenance cost to $3,000. In addition, the plants will require water, a commodity that keeps getting more and more expensive and is scarce during periods of drought. If this approach to traffic calming proves to be effective, and I'm sure it will, then other neighborhoods will want the same thing, and properly so. There must be 50 other streets in residential neighborhoods in Sunnyvale that need traffic-calming measures. Therefore the right action was to pick a more affordable approachthe Chevrolet not the Cadillac. Werner Gans, Sunnyvale |
