Sunnyvale man arrested for child molestation

Sunnyvale police arrested Richard Hayes Stone, 64—a Sunnyvale resident—on May 31 for molesting two Sunnyvale girls, according to Capt. Byron Pipkin, public information officer. Stone was booked at Santa Clara County Jail and arraigned on June 12 with bail set at $1,000,000, he said. Sunnyvale police served search warrants at Stone's residences on June 14 in the continuing investigation.

According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, the case has been under investigation since January, when a 14-year-old girl in Sunnyvale committed suicide and left a note naming Stone as a reason for her suicide. Investigators now believe that the girl had been molested by Stone.

Until his arrest, Stone was living on Flora Vista Avenue in Sunnyvale and had previously lived on Big Basin Way in Boulder Creek. Stone is employed by National Semiconductor in Santa Clara and volunteered as a mentor to students at Santa Clara High School.

Sunnyvale detectives are attempting to identify possible additional victims, according to Pipkin. Anyone with information can call Detective Vince Chetcuti or Detective Kip Melchert at 408.730.7110.

Arson fires are causing alarm

Between 2:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on June 17, eight separate fires were intentionally started in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, according to Capt. Byron Pipkin, public information officer for the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (SDPS). Sunnyvale's fires involved brush, bushes, wood fencing and trees, he said. At one of the fires, on Inverness Way, hot embers from a burning Italian cypress tree caught a small section of roof of a neighboring house on fire, he said.

According to the SPSD report, a possible suspect, described as a white male adult in his mid-20s with a brown backpack, was seen at one of the Santa Clara fires. Members of the public are encouraged to call 911 if they see anyone matching this description in the area of a fire or involved in related suspicious activity. Anyone with non-emergency information regarding these fires can call the SDPS at 408.730.7110 (24 hours a day) or the Sunnyvale Fire Prevention/Arson Investigations at 408.730.7212.
