SVCN excels in CNPA competition Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, publisher of the Sunnyvale Sun, returned from the California Newspaper Publishers convention in San Diego with seven awards. The awards were announced at a luncheon June 29. Winners were the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, first place for General Excellence and second place for Sports Photo; the Saratoga News, second place for General Excellence and second place for Environmental/Ag reporting; Campbell Reporter, first place for Layout and Design and second place for Spot News Photo. The Cupertino Courier won first place in the Editorial Cartoon category. "We're really proud of our entire news team," said SVCN Publisher David Cohen, who attended the awards ceremony at the Hotel del Coronado. "This was an exciting, but stressful year for all of us as we spun SVCN into an independent company and moved most of our staff into our new headquarters building in San Jose. The CNPA awards recognize that we've been able to make the changes without disrupting the quality of our papers." Summer Series starts sizzling The Sunnyvale Downtown Association is sponsoring the third annual Sunnyvale Summer Series, beginning July 10 and running through Aug. 28 in downtown near Murphy Avenue and Evelyn Street. Admission is free. For more information, visit the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce website at www.svcoc.org. County DA brings civil action against auto dealership After an investigation spurred by consumer complaints, the district attorney's office announced on June 13 that its Consumer Protection Unit has brought a civil law enforcement action against Sunnyvale Automotive Repair and its owner and president, Benis Yadegar. The dealership consented to an injunction that prohibited certain conduct, including displaying a used vehicle without posting a Buyer's Guide, charging customers fees that do not represent actual costs in selling used vehicles, and requiring a consumer to sign a blank credit application. The business did not admit liability or any wrongdoing. Sunnyvale Automotive Repair also agreed to pay civil penalties, cost and restitution totaling about $40,000 to the four customers whose complaints initiated the investigation. The settlement was reached after negotiations with Yadegar and his attorney. |
