There were teams from Sunnyvale and Cupertino in the two fields, but it was all Sunnyvale Metro when it came time to determine championships in Little League girls softball play in District 44 Tournament of Champion (TOC) action last week.

The Metro Eagles pulled out a 10-9 thriller against the Sunnyvale National Rosebuds in the finals of the girls major division tournament, and the Metro Tornadoes rolled to a 12-4 win over the Sunnyvale Southern Diamondbacks in the girls junior division title game.

The Eagles, who opened with a 15-3 win over the Cupertino American Tornadoes, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the 10-9 win over the Rosebuds in the major division final. The Rosebuds had beaten the Sunnyvale Southern Wildcats 9-7 in the first round of the tourney.

Emily Rubin belted a two-run home run to spark a seven-run rally in the first to give the Eagles the early lead in the game. But the Rosebuds came back in the second and third to take an 8-7 lead. Patricia Chavez scored what appeared to be an insurance run in the top of the sixth, and the 'Buds took a 9-7 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

But three hits and an error led to three runs for the Eagles, and they pulled out the win and the championship. Nikki Burchell was the winning pitcher for the Eagles, who held the Rosebuds to just six hits.

Metro's Tornadoes joined the Eagles in the TOC winner's circle with a 12-4 win over the Southern Diamondbacks in the junior finals.
