Yankees claim senior TOC Little League title

By Dick Sparrer

Well, at least they were at the plate last week when the Sunnyvale National Little League all-stars rolled to an impressive 11-1 victory over rival Sunnyvale Southern in the District 44 major division all-star tournament.

Dobson and Sierras were each 3 for 3 and J.P. Mapa flipped a three-hitter to lead National to its second straight win in all-star play. The National crew had opened the tourney with a win over Santa Clara Briarwood.

Sierras doubled and singled twice and Dobson had three singles to lead the 10-hit assault for National. Derek Espinoza also doubled in the win.

Robert Ramer and Michael Haruff each doubled in the game for Southern.

Sunnyvale Southern had opened with a tight 6-5 win over Mountain View. Evan Marshall went the distance to toss an eight-hitter for the win, striking out 10. Haruff ripped a two-run double to spark a three-run rally in the fifth inning when Southern rallied from behind to take the 6-5 lead.

Ross Shamer singled and doubled and Daniel Perry, Marshall and Greg Kamradt each doubled for Southern.

It was only a couple of weeks back that the Cupertino National Little League had a team playing for the District 44 Tournament of Champions (TOC) finals. Now National is making a pretty good run in the district's major division all-star tournament.

Cupertino opened with a rousing 19-0 win over Tri-Cities, with three hurlers combining for a no-hitter; then National backed that up with a thrilling 9-8 win over Cupertino American.

American had rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead, but National came right back with two in the bottom of the sixth to win it. Victor Rasor-Thompson tossed a four-hitter, striking out four, to pick up the mound win. He also singled and doubled to help his club offensively.

Jason Estes singled and doubled in the win for National, and Shawn Voight and Jason Hogin belted two hits apiece.

A game earlier, Chad Estes, Chris Gustafson and Voight combined to toss a no-hitter for Cupertino National in a lopsided 19-0 win over Tri-Cities.

Estes, who struck out three in two innings of work and was the winning pitcher, doubled in the first inning to start a nine-run outburst for National. Hogin also ripped a two-bagger in the rally.

Matt Garber blasted a solo home run to straight-away center field in the second inning; doubles by Voight and Justin Rahn sparked an eight-run third; and John Adams doubled home a run in the fourth.

Rasor-Thompson and Voight had three hits apiece in the National victory. Ryan Marcellini singled and Nick Fraccitia allowed just five hits and struck out three, but Sunnyvale Metro lost 8-1 to Santa Clara Homestead.

Sunnyvale Serra lost its opener 3-2 to Los Altos, but fought back to beat Santa Clara Westside 12-0 in the loser's bracket.

Sean Denny tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Serra to the win over Westside. Denny, who struck out three, retired the first 10 batters he faced. His teammates played errorless baseball behind him, and third baseman William Harryman made a couple of outstanding defensive plays.

Akira Moriguchi was 3 for 3 with a double to lead the offensive effort. Paul Wadensweiler and Erik Taubman each belted run-scoring doubles in a three-run rally in the first and both singled later in the game.

Serra put the game away with nine runs in the fourth.

The runs didn't come so easy in the 3-2 loss to Los Altos in the opener. Wadensweiler crushed a solo homer in the first, but Los Altos came back with two in the third and one in the fifth. Serra scored a run in the sixth when Taubman doubled and scored on a single by Moriguchi, but ended up a run short.

Wadensweiler, who ended up with two hits in the game, was tagged with the tough pitching loss despite allowing just six hits and striking out three. Andrew Pardo tripled in the game for Serra.

In other games, Santa Clara Homestead edged Campbell 2-1 and Sunnyvale Metro 1-0, and Moreland beat Santa Clara Westside 5-1 and Los Altos 7-4.

Senior TOC

Chris Knopf allowed just two hits over six innings and ripped a pair of hits to lead the Sunnyvale Southern Yankees to a tight 3-2 win over the Cupertino American Giants in the district's senior division TOC title game.

Willie Hayes ripped a solo homer for the Yanks and Shaun Wright had two hits in the win. Hayes also hauled in a long fly ball at the fence in center field in the bottom of the seventh to help preserve the win for the Yankees.

Junior TOC

Brett Gilbert gave up just a couple of hits over five innings as he tossed the Cupertino National Rangers to an 8-2 win over the Sunnyvale National A's in the finals of the district's junior division TOC.

The Rangers broke the game open with a five-run rally in the third inning. Brendon Poss tossed a complete game for the A's.

The Rangers had beaten Tri-Cities 5-3 in the semifinals. Nick Burrow was the winning pitcher, striking out six and giving up just six hits over five innings.

Kevin Graf doubled twice and singled to drive in three runs in the win, and Scott Bertolucci doubled twice and scored a pair of runs. Bryce Drysdale also doubled for the Rangers.

Leo Haley had a pair of hits to drive in two runs for Tri-Cities, and Taylor Yemm singled and scored twice. Jimmy Trask and Adam Roberts also had hits.

Junior all-stars

Cupertino National opened with a four-inning 13-3 win over Cupertino American in the junior all-star tournament. Jason Plank tossed the four innings for the win, fanning five and giving up five hits. Plank had a couple of hits and knocked in four runs in the win.

John Lin and Will Guthrie were top hitters for American, and Mike Reid pitched well in relief.

In other action, John Austin tossed a four-hitter to lead Sunnyvale Southern to a 14-4 win over Los Altos. Austin doubled and singled twice to lead the offensive attack, and it was one of his doubles that started a seven-run rally in the fourth.

Anthony Arellanes of Sunnyvale National and Chris Wong of Sunnyvale Serra locked up in a real pitchers' duel in their tourney opener, and it was National coming out on top 5-4 in eight innings.

Arellanes tossed a seven-hitter for the win, striking out three. He also doubled twice, scored twice and was on base four times in the win.

Catcher Ignacio Tabarez made the defensive play of the game when he held onto the ball in a collision at home plate to record an out on what could have been the winning run for Serra.

Wong was the hard-luck loser. The Serra hurler tossed a four-hitter and struck out 13, but was tagged with the mound loss.

9-10 all-stars

David Ometer fired a no-hitter to lead the Sunnyvale Metro 9-10 age group all-stars to a 4-0 win over Sunnyvale National.

Ometer struck out six and was aided by some nifty defensive work behind him by Metro.

Chris Sudarsanam and Nick Marcellini each singled, knocked in a run and scored a run for Metro. Derek Rebholtz singled and scored and Matt Van Vliet singled and drove in a run.

Loleti Mapa was the losing pitcher, despite striking out seven and allowing just five hits over five innings of work.

Derek DeFrank doubled home Evan Vuckovic with the winning run to lead Cupertino American to a tight 7-6 win over Mountain View.

Marcus Lefton had singled to open the fifth inning and stole second. Vuckovic doubled Lefton home to tie the game 6-6, then DeFrank doubled home the game winner.

Vuckovic had two doubles in the game and Ben Menuier went the distance to pick up the mound win, striking out five.

Kevin Wilson was the winning pitcher for Cupertino National in an 8-4 win over Moreland. Cory Stone was stuck with the tough pitching loss.

Spencer Franks singled and doubled and James Roberts and Matthew Wright slapped two hits apiece, but Tri-Cities lost 11-6 to Santa Clara Homestead. Jonathan Cousins belted a two-run single in the loss.

Nick Cisneros ripped a two-run double, but Cupertino National lost 22-7 to Los Altos #1.

Los Altos #1 outslugged Santa Clara Briarwood 18-16; Briarwood topped Moreland; Sunnyvale Metro beat Santa Clara Westside; Sunnyvale National edged Campbell 5-4; and Sunnyvale Serra whipped Los Altos #2 11-3 and beat Santa Clara Homestead 5-1.
