By Dick Sparrer League president Brad Gallien did more than just bring the regular season to an official end at the closing ceremonies for the Sunnyvale Metro Little League recentlyÑhe also made some very special presentations. Gallien honored Gary Dryden and the husband- and-wife volunteer tandem of Ray and Kay Gehring with special awards at the ceremonies held June 15 at Ortega Park. The new awards are part of the national Little League's Volunteer Awards program, according to league secretary Annette Cardosi. Dryden was presented with the Challenger Award, given to an "individual who demonstrates the characteristics of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play." Dryden has coached the Mets for six years in the league's Challenger Division, a division for mentally and physically challenged youngsters, and he has also coached teams in other divisions in the league. He does it all, despite having no child of his own in the program. Ray and Kay Gehring have served as volunteers in the Sunnyvale Metro Little League for 10 years. Ray Gehring created the league's pioneer division, providing youngsters with a transition from T-ball to the farm division, and it has proved to be a model for other leagues in District 44. He has served the league as a coach, manager, vice president and player-agent. Key Gehring has served through the years as a team parent and has helped the league with uniforms, and team pins and in many other capacities. Their two sons, Bryant and Mitchell, were each players in the league. |
