City approves new public safety job

The Sunnyvale City Council voted 5-2 to approve the newly developed classification of Assistant Director of Public Safety to the Sunnyvale Department of Public safety at its July 23 meeting, with Council members Pat Vorreiter and Manuel Valerio dissenting. The two-part motion included the approval of the assistant director's position along with a salary resolution for the director of Public Safety, which council members voted to defer until a later date.

Both Vorreiter and Valerio said they were in agreement in approving the assistant director's position but wanted to defer the salary change of the director to a future time and therefore decided to dissent.

"My intention is to hire a person with excellent leadership and management skills who can take over the administrative services," said Irwin "Ernie" Bakin, chief of SDPS.

Due to attrition, the department will lose several supervisory and specialty positions within the next few years, explained Bakin. The new assistant director will manage a staff of about a 100 people with responsibilities that include police operations and recruitment, he said. The only other department in the city that currently has an assistant director is the department of public works.

Watercolor Society celebrates 35 years

watercolor show Aug. 1–30 at Rose Shenson Gallery, located behind the Triton Museum at 1505 Warburton Ave., Santa Clara.

On display at the show will be original works of art from local residents, including Cupertino and Sunnyvale, ranging from traditional transparent to experimental watercolor media.

The society was started by a high school art teacher named Samuel Cook, who also taught adult classes in watercolor at an art store in San Jose, and has expanded to 300 members. Members of the society continually seek out artistically interesting places and areas of historical significance to paint before they disappear due to development. The society holds workshops, paint site day trips every Thursday and larger trips.

The gallery hours are Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information about the show or membership in Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society, call Bette Paris Mohr at 408.379.7499 or visit www.scvws.org.
