Six athletes from the Studio Kicks Martial Arts Training Center in Los Gatos placed at the 2002 Chinese American Athletic Association Wushu Tournament held earlier this month at De Anza College in Cupertino.

Ashley MacDonald, 13, of Saratoga and Pat McGale each placed first in broadsword, and McGale added a second in the staff men's division.

JoAnne Fitzsimmons nailed first in both straightsword and open hand contemporary, and she was second in the traditional open hand women's division.

Casey Dahlbeck, 10, of Saratoga was second in broadsword with Kyle Mui, 12, of Los Gatos third in both broadsword, and open hand and Nick Smith, 14, of Los Gatos second in open hand and third in broadsword.


Quakes tryouts

The Silicon Valley Quakes, the South Bay area's longest uninterrupted traveling roller hockey program, will be holding its 2002­03 tryouts on Sept. 8 and 15 at Rollin Ice in San Jose.

The Quakes plan to field four teams the upcoming season--mites (birth years 1992, '93), squirts ('90, '91), peewees ('88, '89), and bantams ('86, '87).

Tryouts for mites and squirts will be held from 7 to 8:30 a.m., and tryouts for peewees and bantams will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The cost to try out is $5, and players should bring both a light and dark jersey to tryouts.

Youth soccer

The De Anza Youth Soccer League will hold registration for the fall recreation program on Aug. 28, 6:30­8:30 p.m., at Creekside Park, on Miller between Bollinger and Stevens Creek.

Sign-ups are for players who will be 9 or younger as of July 31, 2002, and the cost is $95 per player. Players must provide a birth certificate or passport and a small photo. Parents may request that players be placed on the same team with same age, same gender friends.
