A golf tournament to benefit Notre Dame High School in San Jose will be held Oct. 7 at The Villages Golf and Country Club in San Jose. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at noon.

The entry fee of $195 includes lunch, golf, contests, auctions, a cocktail party, dinner and an awards ceremony.

Maverick hockey

The Maverick Hockey Club will hold roller hockey tryouts Sept. 7 and 21, 7­10 a.m., at The Bladium in Alameda and on Sept. 8, 7­10 a.m., at Rollin Ice in San Jose.

The club, established in 1993, features divisions for 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 (as of Dec. 31, 2002) age groups. Teams practice once a week for two hours, and there are special programs for goalkeepers and beginners.

Special Olympics

An orientation meeting for volunteers interested in joining the Special Olympics program will be held Sept. 10, 7 p.m., at the City of San Jose office building, 43 E. Gish Road off N. First Street.

The Special Olympics fall season includes soccer, power lifting, volleyball, distance running and walking, cycling and bowling.
