Council provides support to housing group
By Jana Seshadri
Sunnyvale has agreed to provide financial support to the Emergency Housing Consortium to acquire the property located on 183 Acalanes Drive, which will provide permanent affordable rental housing for needy families.

On the consortium's request, the Sunnyvale City Council unanimously approved the use of $1.5 million of Community Development Block Grant funds to finance the purchase of the 24-unit rental housing complex. The complex will house low-income families, according to Annabel Yurutucu, housing officer.

Yurutucu explained that the $1.5 million would be culled from many different sources, including federal grants they already receive annually for housing purposes.

To finance the balance of the purchase, the consortium is planning to use up to $3 million of a tax-exempt bond and has requested that the city issue the bond itself. The city will have no financial liability for the issuance of the bonds, Yurutucu said.

Although the project has been approved, the families will be housed through attrition, Yurutucu said.

"No one will be displaced from the complex," she said at the meeting. "Eligible families will move in as and when space becomes available."

Barry del Buono and Poncho Guevara from the consortium explained they would continue to offer all their services to the low-income families to assist them in their transitional phase. Some of the agency's services include providing shelter, case management, goal assessment, clothing and other basic supplies, workshops and access to medical care.

The group has provided supportive housing services to homeless families for the past 20 years throughout Santa Clara County. The agency owns six apartment buildings, four houses, a 95-unit single room occupancy project, a 26-family apartment complex and a 250-bed shelter facility.
