Homestead's Boyle runs strong at Center Meet

Jason Yow led Monta Vista to the boys team title and Alicia Follmar of Saratoga won the girls individual crown when the best runners from the area converged on the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs for an Oct. 24 Center Meet.

Yow, a sophomore, finished fifth in 16:36 to lead the Matadors to the overall boys championship. Freshman Scott Russell was 10th, with seniors Julian Kolev 11th, Drew Fetterman 24th and Stewart Jones 33rd.

Individuals running strong in the 146-runner field at the Center Meet were Homestead freshman David Pochowski, 19th in 17:18, and sophomore Chris Cook, 27th in 17:26.

Fremont had four runners finish in a pack but needed five finishers to rank among the top teams in the meet. Austin Sardella was 21st in 17:20, with Dennis Campos 29th, Randall Polgar 31st and Richard Trevino 33rd.

Follmar set the pace in the girls varsity race the same day. The Saratoga sophomore finished first in 19:21, outrunning second-place finisher Michal Oda-Burns of Menlo School by 11 seconds.

Follmar led the Saratoga girls to a team sixth in the meet, but it was Monta Vista and Lynbrook finishing one-two among the girls teams at the event.

Dana Underwood finished sixth in 20:10 to lead the Matadors to the team championship. The junior was supported by Jill Blake-Burke, 10th overall, Christine Yow, 15th, Katherine Chu, 23rd, and Evelyn Ling, 35th.

Rebecca Boyle, a Homestead junior, was 11th in 20:44, with Cupertino's Lisa Chang 25th and Shannon Dye 27th in the 105-runner field.

In the boys frosh-soph race, Hari Subramaniam finished third overall in 17:34 to lead the Falcons to a team title.

Fremont's Haruki Shimoda finished fifth overall to lead the Firebirds to a team fourth. Greg Crane was 16th.

In the junior varsity girls race, Nikki Kinney of Fremont finished first in 15:12 to lead the Firebirds to a team third. Kassie Korobkova was ninth for Fremont, with Kim Ligh Quach 22nd.

Justin Lee of Monta Vista was second in 18:29 to lead the Matadors to a crown in the boys JV division.

Fremont nailed a team fifth behind the efforts of Joseph Seo, who was eighth overall in 18:55. Leo Torres ran 16th for the Firebirds.
