It was a long night for the Los Altos football team ... heck, it's been a long year for the Los Altos football team!
The Eagles ran headfirst into powerhouse Homestead last Friday night at Fremont's Diesner Field in Sunnyvale. And the Mustangs, with their sights set firmly on a run for the championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, steam-rolled Los Altos 63-34.
The win helped the Mustangs improve to 5-0 in the division and to 7-1 for the year. Los Altos, meanwhile, slipped to 0-4 in league play and to 1-7 for the season.
Homestead finishes the league season this week in a big game at Cupertino. The Mustangs and Pioneers will match perfect division records in the game, and the winner will no doubt lock up no worse than a share of the El Camino Division crown.
Cupertino pounded Lynbrook 49-21 last week to improve to 4-0 in the division and to 7-1 for the season. The Pioneers still have a Nov. 15 date with Fremont.
The 7:30 p.m. game on Nov. 8 against Cupertino will mark the end of the league season for the Mustangs. They wrap up the regular season the following week in a non-league game against Milpitas at Diesner.
Will Faules had another big week for the Mustangs last Friday against Los Altos. The speedster scored five touchdowns on runs of 41, two, 12, 90 and 80 yards.

Jeff Tucker, Richard Scott, Brown, Josh Baquette, Daniel Sizemore, Sean Carey, Max Kinderman, Graham Nayler and Eddie Sumpter were defensive leaders for Homestead in the win.
Fremont falls
It was a long day for Fremont, too. The Firebirds traveled to Mountain View for an afternoon game but lost a lopsided 35-0 decision.
Fremont, 2-2 in the division and 3-5 for the year, will try to get back on the winning track this week. The Firebirds host Lynbrook on Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m., at Diesner Field. It will be homecoming night for Fremont.
The Vikings come in with a 1-3 record in league play and a 1-7 mark overall. Their only win this season came against Los Altos.
