The top runners in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League will be racing for the finish line in league finals this week. And they were tuning up for the rugged meet on Oct. 31 in the annual running of the Lynbrook Invitational.

Saratoga's Alicia Follmar and Monta Vista's Ian Laform romped to wins on the 2.1-mile course that crossed Lynbrook's San Jose campus on Halloween day last Thursday.

The performance of Laform, just a freshman, was a real treat for the Matadors. He covered the distance in 11:08.8 to finish a minute ahead of his nearest rivals, teammates Jason Low and Julian Kolev.

Cupertino's David Rabinowitz (23rd), Gautam Pbri (25th) and Andrew Loc (29th) also finished in the top 30, along with Eugene Berson (27th) of Lynbrook.

Follmar set the pace in the girls' varsity race. The Saratoga sophomore finished first in 12:38.9, outrunning junior Dana Underwood of Monta Vista to the finish chute. Underwood was second in 12:55.5.

Lynbrook's Aya Wakabayashi and Zohreh Akhavan were close behind. Wakabayashi, a junior, was third in 13:06.9 and Akhavan was fourth in 13:14.3.

Junior Jill Blake-Burke supported Underwood's effort by placing fifth in 13:20.3 for the Matadors. Monta Vista's Christine Yow, a senior, was seventh in 13:40.6, with freshman Vanessa Shih eighth in 13:47.7 and junior Katherine Chu 12th in 14:09.5 to lead the Mats to the team title.
