Recruitment deadline extended to Jan. 24

A few Sunnyvale boards and commissions still have vacancies to fill, and the city is seeking more applicants. There's one vacancy each at the arts commission, the building code of appeals, the heritage commission and the housing and human services commission. The deadline has been extended to Jan. 24.

For more information, call Donna Biles, deputy city clerk, at 408.730.7595.

Transportation plan meeting on Jan. 8

A number of major roadway capital-improvement projects will be necessary to mitigate increased travel in the city generated by new development over the next few decades. Without a source of funds for improvements to the city's transportation system, traffic congestion could negatively affect the city's economy, neighborhoods and environmental health. The city's future funding needs are estimated at approximately $100 million.

City officials have scheduled the second in a series of community meetings to gather input on a strategic program for long-range transportation infrastructure improvements. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Columbia Middle School staff room, located at 739 Morse Ave.

School hosts a pair of 'Heroes' shows

More than 150 Ponderosa Elementary School children will participate in 'Heroes,' a Starting Arts extravaganza, which takes place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18 and at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Sun Santa Clara Auditorium, located at 4030 George

Sellon Circle. Guest vocalists from Westwood Elementary will also take part.

Starting Arts was created in 2000 to revive arts education in the Santa Clara Unified School District. The program currently covers nine schools within the district. The nonprofit organization depends on community support and corporate sponsorship to pursue its mission.

Tickets are on sale at Ponderosa Elementary School or by calling Starting Arts at 408.244.9792. Tickets will also be available at the door. General seating is $5 for adults and children.

More information on Starting Arts is available at the website, located at www.startingarts.com.
