NOVA to hold Job Shadow on Jan. 31

The NOVA Youth Employment Office is partnering with Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley and Monterey Bay to sponsor Groundhog Job Shadow Day on Jan. 31. Students will "shadow" workplace mentors as they go through a normal day on the job. Shadowing will help students better understand the critical link between school and career, allowing for more informed educational and career choices, says NOVA Director Michael Curran.

Last year more than 2,500 students participated, along with more than 70 local sponsor companies.

For more information, contact NOVA at 408.522.9848 or Junior Achievement at 408.988.8915, ext. 203, or email jobshadow@novaworks.org.

Sunnyvale receives 2002 CAPE Award

The city of Sunnyvale has received a 2002 California Award for Performance Excellence (CAPE) from the California Council for Excellence, becoming the first city in the state to receive the award. A team of CAPE examiners visited the city last November for three days to examine Sunnyvale's systems and practices, following which the city was selected to receive the award.

The award is patterned after the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, which recognizes high-performing businesses, health care organizations and educational institutions on an annual basis. City officials will be attending the council's ninth annual Education Council in

Manhattan Beach on April 29, where Sunnyvale and 10 other award winners will be recognized.
