Jenelle Kitasoe was on fire, and there was nothing the Mountain View girls basketball team could do to keep her under control.
As a result, the Homestead junior went for 34 points last Wednesday night to lead the Mustangs to a lopsided 67-34 win over the Spartans in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Kitasoe buried six of seven shots from three-point range on her way to a 34-point night for Homestead. She finished with 14 field goals overall, and her individual total matched the scoring total for the entire Mountain View team in the game.
Mandy Wald joined Kitasoe in twin figures with 14 points. She had five field goals to go with four points from the free-throw line.
Homestead jumped out to a 20-5 first-quarter lead, then outscored Mountain View in every period on the road to the easy victory.
Melissa Manuel supported with eight points in the win. Elyse Maru hit four, Kristel Colvin had three and Kelly Desilva and Joanna Harris added two apiece.
Homestead faced a Friday bye, but the Mustangs were to return to the court on Jan. 28 to host Santa Clara, and they will be on the road to visit Wilcox on Jan. 31, 6 p.m. The Mustangs are 5-0 in the El Camino Division and 13-5 for the year.
In other El Camino Division action on Jan. 22, Fremont rolled to a 45-30 win over Santa Clara behind a 12-point effort by senior guard Diana Sanchez.
It was a big second-half charge that sparked the Firebirds to the victory. Fremont led 10-8 after a period, but Santa Clara tied it in the second quarter, making it 15-15 at intermission. But Fremont outscored Santa Clara 11-6 in the third and 19-9 in the fourth to pull away.
Stacey Moore tossed in 10 points in the Fremont win, and Natalie Arias and Erin Sturm popped eight apiece. Aneta Pariaszevski, Kelly Bushnell and Nicole Carbajal each had two points, and Jessica Suoboda had one.
The Firebirds improved to 3-1 in the division and to 6-9 for the year with the win.
