Public Safety
The following incidents were compiled from the log at the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
Murder—Jan. 26, 9:41 p.m., 700 block of San Justo Court. Sunnyvale public safety officers responded to a reported fight involving multiple subjects armed with bats and sticks. Carlos Ceja, a 24-year-old Sunnyvale resident, was transported by ambulance to Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. Felix Benitez was arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of Ceja and later released.

Petty theft—Jan. 19, 2:51 p.m., 100 block of N. Lawrence Station Road. A suspect was detained in front of a store on suspicion of stealing merchandise. The suspect was carrying a black laptop bag that contained two bottles of Remy Martin XO Cognac with a combined value of $187.98. Loss prevention agents placed the suspect under arrest. A record clerk revealed that the suspect has served time for robbery and grand theft. The suspect was booked into county jail.

Commercial burglary—Jan. 17, 3 p.m., 400 block of N. Mathilda Avenue. The suspect entered a locker room and cut the victim's combination lock. A wallet was stolen.

Auto burglary—Jan. 17, 9:30 p.m., 900 block of Ponderosa Avenue. A Sunnyvale police officer found the passenger side rear window of a camper shell smashed. A Sony camcorder was discovered missing from the bed area of the camper.

Resisting Arrest—Jan. 17, 11:39 p.m., 600 block of Bernal Avenue. Three Sunnyvale police officers responded to a fight involving eight suspects with bottles being thrown. One officer reported that upon arrival the suspects were running through the complex. After two officers identified themselves and told the three men to stop, they pursued one suspect in a yellow jacket into an apartment. The suspect was cited and released at the scene.

Possession of controlled substance—Jan. 16, 11:30 p.m., 600 block of E. Arques Avenue. A Sunnyvale police officer responded to an argument between two suspects, who were detained during the investigation. During a consensual search of the residence, hypodermic needles and spoons with a white crystalline substance that later tested presumptive positive for amphetamine was found. The suspects were taken into custody based on observations of objective symptoms. The suspects were booked at the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Blood samples were taken and the suspects were transported to the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

Auto burglary—Jan. 15, 2 p.m., 900 block of Linden Avenue. A suspect forced entry into a vehicle by smashing the driver's side window. A car stereo was stolen from the dashboard.

Commercial burglary—Jan. 9, 6 p.m., 200 block of S. Mathilda Avenue. A suspect entered a business and stole approximately $600 in cash.
