Public safety offers gunlocks for free

As part of a continuing campaign to promote firearm safety, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety has announced it will begin distributing gunlocks to community residents on a regular basis. Together with the Santa Clara/San Mateo County SAFE KIDS Coalition and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, the public safety department is providing educational materials, safety tips and free gunlocks to area firearm owners. The public safety department is one of 29 permanent gunlock distribution sites within Santa Clara County. Japanese-American internment tales

Megumi, a professional storyteller, is hosting a presentation about Japanese-American internees and their years spent in California internment camps. After a 45-minute storytelling program, there will be a question and answer session. The program is open to teens and adults and will be held on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Public Library.

City plans for ninth basketball shootout

The Sunnyvale's Department of Public Safety and the Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department have collaborated to present a basketball event to offer students an opportunity to interact with city staff. Community members are invited to show their support for nearly 200 finalists as they compete

for top honors at the finals. The evening kicks off with a shootout featuring city staff.

The basketball shootout is scheduled for Feb. 7, 7­9 p.m., at the Columbia Neighborhood Center, 785 Morse Ave.


City of Sunnyvale completes 11 miles of bike lanes

The city of Sunnyvale has just completed the construction of 11 miles of new bike lanes. This brings the total amount of bike lanes in the city to 33, nearly doubling Sunnyvale's bikeway network within the last three years. The additional lanes are part of the city's ongoing efforts to promote and encourage bicycle travel and awareness. The city is hoping to expand the bike lane network even further, with lanes along Evelyn Ave. under development.


City hosts a free compost workshop

The city of Sunnyvale's recycling program is hosting a workshop to teach residents how to make compost from yard trimmings. There is no admission fee, but interested parties should call 408.730.7262 to reserve a space. The workshop will be held on Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon at the community center arboretum, 550 E. Remington Drive.
