The war in Iraq has forced thousands of reserve soldiers to leave home and help in the war effort. Sunnyvale resident Otto Lee is one of those. He's also trying to serve the people of Sunnyvale in his very spare time.

Lee, a resident of Sunnyvale for over eight years, is on Sunnyvale's planning commission and has attended every meeting but one since his recruitment to San Diego in early February. An attorney, Lee owns and manages a law firm in Sunnyvale.

Lee is a lieutenant commander supply officer. His job is to support six aircraft carriers. "Seventy percent of the ships are deployed in the Middle East," he says, "and quite a few are based in the waters near North Korea."

He works with the data that comes from the ships regarding their shortages and deficiencies and determines which ship needs what item the most. Then he expedites the supplies to the ships.

"Our job is to focus on the airplanes because without repair parts, they're not able to fly," Lee says.

Lee has always wanted to travel, and he joined the Navy straight out of college in 1989. He served two years before he began law school.

"I joined the Navy to see the world, but I stayed because it's worthwhile. I've been really privileged to have been able to serve, even if it's not always fun," Lee says.

Though Lee has concerns about the necessity of the current war, he does emphasize the importance of showing support for the war effort. "We shouldn't be blamed for political decisions. Now that the decision has been made, the troops need support," he says.

"Ultimately, the important thing is to minimize the pain and suffering for the U.S. troops and of course for the innocent civilians," he says.

What makes it even harder for Lee to manage his responsibilities is that he's planning to run in the fall for the city council seat currently held by Manuel Valerio.

"I imagine I'll be in San Diego for at least three months but of course that depends on the situation in the Middle East," Lee says. He plans to campaign on the weekends and says he will try to walk the precinct in as many neighborhoods as possible.

As a planning commissioner, Lee says, he has enjoyed bringing people together and fostering dialogue in the community. "Whether it's developing houses, tree cutting, or encouraging businesses to work together, there is always an opportunity to get to know the residents," he says.
