Members of Sunnyvale's business community came together recently to honor those in the armed forces who are fighting abroad. The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce held a flag-raising ceremony at the Chamber office on the morning of April 1 to acknowledge Sunnyvale residents serving in the military.
The Chamber distributed American flag pins with yellow ribbons to all those present at the ceremony. Chamber staff attached a yellow ribbon to the raised flag and then presented a banner listing the names of Sunnyvale employees and residents who have been called to serve.
"We feel that it's important that the troops are supported in a visible way," says Suzi Blackman, president and CEO of the Chamber. Blackman says the Chamber is not in a position to take a stance on the current war. At the same time, members agreed to hold a ceremony to show support for those that are serving.
The yellow ribbon is symbolic of the troops coming home, says Blackman.
Leslie Lawton of We Produce recited a prayer, and Brenda Hendrickson of Advanced Micro Devices sang the national anthem.
The Chamber will display the banner listing the names of military personnel until the war is over, Blackman said.
To add names to the banner, call the Chamber at 408.736.4971.
