Firebirds christen pool with swim wins
By Dick Sparrer
It's been a long time coming. But it seems only appropriate that since Fremont High School has a brand new swimming pool this year that the Firebirds should christen it with a couple of victories.

And they did just that in a couple of recent dual meets.

The Fremont boys cruised to their first dual meet victory in six years with a 93-79 win over the Chargers. The triumph came just a couple of weeks after the Fremont girls nailed their first win in four years by beating Milpitas.

Tony Zhu won two individual events and was a member of two winning relay teams to lead the 'Birds to the boys win over Wilcox. Zhu took the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly to star for Fremont.

Zhu teamed with Gordon Cameron, Andrew Amm, and Stephen Shimshock to open the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The same quartet closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay.

Shimshock (200 free), Cameron (100 backstroke) and Amm (100 breaststroke) were other individual winners for the Firebirds in the meet.

The same day the Fremont girls tied Wilcox 87-87 behind a solid showing by Ally Meyer, who was first in the 200 free and 500 free. She also joined forces with Angela Cascone, Kristin Sterling, and Michelle Haight to win the 400 free relay. Meyer's effort in the 200 free was good for Central Coast Section qualification.

Cascone was first in the 200 IM and Haight won the 100 fly. Jamie Buckingham rounded out the list of winners with a first in the one-meter diving event.

Haight, Cascone, Elise Gaudette, Kristin Sterling, Scarlett Eisenhauer, Karla Davidson, and Vanessa Easop all recorded personal-beat times for the Firebirds against Wilcox.

Personal bests for the boys were clocked by Zhu, Shimshock, Mark Boyer, Kenny Gartner, and Jeremy Neely. Zhu's effort in the 100 fly was a CCS qualifying time.

In league action last Friday, the Fremont boys lost 102-69 to Santa Clara, but the girls came through with an impressive 97-65 win over the Bruins.

Meyer, a freshman, won the 200 IM in 2:24.47 and the 100 fly in 1:06.78 to lead the Lady Birds to victory. She combined with Haight, Laine Armour, and Cascone for a win in the 200 medley relay in 2:11:94, and she joined with Cascone, Robin Weitzman and Armour to take the 400 free relay in 4:23.62.

Cascone was tops in the 200 free in 2:18.60, Armour won the 100 breast in 1:22.35, Gaudette was first in the 500 free in 6:58.19 and Buckingham was tops in diving with 89.65 points. Times notched by Weitzman, Armour, and Gaudette were personal bests.

The Fremont boys could manage just two wins against the Bruins. Amm was first in the 100 back in 1:11.62 and Trevor Fontes won the 1-meter diving event with 252.85 points.

But personal bests were recorded by Neely, Cameron, Patrick Van Zandt, Gartner, Patrick Samuels, and Shimshock.

Earlier in the year, Fremont lost twice to Cupertino. The boys dropped a 118-64 nod to the Pioneers and the girls fell 102-80.

Zhu raced to wins in the 200 IM in 2:12.19 and the 100 fly in 59.91 to lead the Fremont boys. Fontes was first in diving with 157.58 points and Amm took the 100 breast in 1:09.90.

For the girls, Meyer was a winner in the 200 IM in 2:22.69 and the 500 free in 5:28.75, and she teamed with Cascone, Armour and Haight for a first in the 400 free relay in 4:13.63.

Also adding wins were Cascone in the 200 free in 2:15.19, Haight in the 100 fly in 1:08.84 and Buckingham in diving at 106.73.
