It was a good week for the Fremont baseball team, but it could have been better. Still, you won't catch head coach Mike Smith complaining.
The Firebirds won two of three games last week, and their only loss came at the hands of Wilcox, the first place team in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Fremont opened the week with a thrilling 10-9 win over Gunn, but lost 8-3 to unbeaten Wilcox on Wednesday. The Firebirds came back, though, with a 7-5 win over Cupertino to remain hot in the title race in the division.
The Firebirds were outhit 12-5 by the Titans to open the week, but Fremont made good use of its five hits. Scott Boardman and Ernie Vargas knocked in two runs apiece and Chris Knopf and Rocky Russell each doubled to help the 'Birds fly to the victory.
Dan Bergeron was the winning pitcher for Fremont, evening his record at 1-1, and Ryan Boardman came on in relief to pick up his first save.
Fremont rallied for four runs in the second to jump in front of the Titans, but Gunn came back with five in the third to grab the lead. The Firebirds answered with four in the home half of the third to move in front 8-5.
The clubs traded runs in the fourth before Gunn tied it with three in the fifth. Fremont scored in the sixth, though, to take a 10-9 lead and R. Boardman closed it out by tossing a scoreless seventh.
The Firebirds, 6-2 in the division and 6-4 for the year, dropped an 8-3 decision to Wilcox a couple of days later. The score was tied 2-2 after three frames, but the Chargers scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
Jack Chapman doubled and S. Boardman and Vargas had two hits apiece to lead an eight-hit attack for Fremont.
Brett Bonetti blasted a two-run homer as Fremont battled back to beat Cupertino 7-5 on Friday. S. Boardman singled and doubled to drive in two runs and Matt Martinez and Daniel Murrell each singled and doubled. Chapman and Knopf also doubled.
Martinez nailed the mound win for Fremont and Nathan Cathcart came on for the save.
Fremont returns to the diamond this week to host Palo Alto on April 9, 3:30 p.m., and to visit Los Gatos on April 11.
In other local action, Homestead dropped three games last week to slip to 4-5 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and to 6-7 for the year.
Will Hayes doubled and singled twice to drive in three runs, but the Mustangs lost 10-4 to Saratoga on Saturday. Danny Sizemore doubled and Easton Friedling had two hits.
Sizemore had two hits and Craig Moberg doubled, but the Mustangs lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Santa Clara.Moberg homered, Brian McGee tripled and Hayes had two hits, but the Mustangs were roughed up 13-2 by Los Altos.
The Mustangs will try to return to their winning ways this week when they visit Mountain View on April 10, 3:30 p.m. Homestead faces Lawrence Academy in a non-league game on April 11, 6 p.m., at Washington Park in Santa Clara before opening play in the Lions Tournament on April 12 against Gilroy at PAL Stadium, 7 p.m.
