Old Faithful Hydrant?
Water from the broken hydrant on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road (between Fremont Boulevard and Remington Drive) gushes an impressive fountain of water into the sky on April 7. A Pacific Bell truck had struck the hydrant, taking off the top. Richard Christensen of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Works says a public works crew that was right around the corner responded in five minutes. 'But it took about 10 minutes to close off the flow because the men were trying to seal the break without interrupting water service to other customers.' He says they lost about 1,300 gallons per minute for a total of some 20,000 gallons.
