Glass, Carbajal lead Fremont to victory

Wins don't come any sweeter than the one the Fremont girls softball team nailed against Saratoga in recent Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division play against Saratoga.

Kim Glass tossed a four-hit shutout and Adriana Carbajal scored the game's only run in a 1-0 Fremont victory over the Falcons.

It was a thrilling way to start the second half of the division season, and the Firebirds backed it up with a 15-1 win over Cupertino.

But since that time, things have been less than sweet for the Fremont girls.

Fremont has now dropped three straight games to slip to 5-5 in the division and to 9-11 for the year.

Still, the Lady Birds have that thrilling win over Saratoga as a pleasant memory.

Glass scattered the four hits, striking out four and walking just one, to toss Fremont to the win over the Falcons.

Carbajal reached on a fielder's choice, took second and third on wild pitches, and scored on a ground out by Ally Lang for Fremont's only run of the game—the only run Glass needed.

Overall this season, Jessica Moore and Milana Jordan have been the hitting leaders for Fremont and Lang has knocked in the most runs. Kelsey Severns leads the club in on-base percentage.

Glass and Teena Joos have shared the pitching chores for Fremont this spring.

Fremont battled back after edging Saratoga to blast Cupertino 15-1. Joos fired a one-hitter for the Lady Birds and Severns singled and tripled to drive in three runs. Lang and Jessica Diaz had two hits apiece and knocked in two runs each, and Jordan had two hits.

But the Lady Birds lost 11-4 to Palo Alto a game later.

Glass singled and doubled to drive in two runs in the game for Fremont. Jordan singled and doubled, Erin Sturm singled and tripled and Joos had two hits.

Fremont was then beaten twice by Homestead, losing 6-3 in the completion of a suspended game, then lost 10-8.

Karen Purdy scattered seven hits to lead the Mustangs to the 6-3 win over Fremont. Purdy improved her record to 6-2 with the mound win.

Sturm and Moore blasted home runs, but the Firebirds lost 10-8 to Homestead in the second game.

The Mustangs improved to 8-2 in league play with the wins.

'Birds take 2 of 3

The Fremont baseball team, meanwhile, won two of three games last week in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.

The Firebirds rolled past Cupertino 9-3, then edged the Pioneers 3-1 before losing a tough 6-5 nod to Los Gatos.

Ryan Boardman tossed a complete game, pushing his record to 4-1, in the 9-3 victory over the Pioneers that was the completion of a game suspended earlier in the year.

Senior catcher Jack Chapman blasted a home run and also singled to knock in two runs for the Firebirds. Scott Boardman singled and tripled to drive in a couple of runs and R. Boardman singled and doubled. Brett Bonetti and Chris Knopf added two hits apiece.

In the regularly scheduled game that day, Kris Dunwoody went the distance to flip a four-hitter to lead the Firebirds to a 3-1 win. Matt Martinez led a five-hit Fremont attack with a couple of singles.

The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Fremont came back with three in the top of the second. Dunwoody blanked the Pioneers the rest of the way to nail down the win.

Fremont slipped to 12-9 for the year and 9-6 in league play when the Firebirds dropped a 6-5 decision to Gatos to finish the week.

R. Boardman blasted a two-run homer in the game for Fremont.

The Firebirds close out the regular season this week. They were to visit Palo Alto on Monday and they will host Milpitas on May 14 and Gunn on May 16.

Mustangs go 1-2

The Homestead baseball team opened play last week with an 8-2 win over Lynbrook to pull to .500 in El Camino play, but the Mustangs lost 11-1 to Saratoga and 5-3 to Mountain View to slip to 7-9 in the league race and to 12-13 for the year.

Brian McGee homered and doubled to lead the Mustangs past the Vikings. Chris Bailey tripled home a couple of runs in the win. Danny Sizemore and Craig Moberg chipped in with two hits apiece and Craig Maynard drove in two runs.

Keith McLaughlin was the winning pitcher, holding the Vikings to just two hits as he pushed his mound record to 2-1.

Things didn't go quite as well against the Falcons. McGee had two hits and Easton Friedling doubled, but Homestead could manage just five hits in the loss to Saratoga.

The Mustangs came back with just five more hits later in the week in the 5-3 loss to the Spartans. Will Hayes and Joey Faber had two hits apiece for Homestead.
