Kritzer, Faules star at track, Barkley and Bushnell win
By Dick Sparrer
Monta Vista and Homestead may have finished in the middle of the standings at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division track and field finals last week, but not all of the Matadors and Mustangs were back in the pack.

Monta Vista and Homestead had their share of winners as each school ran home from the division meet with four gold medals.

Bobby Kritzer of Monta Vista and Will Faules won two golds apiece to lead the local effort at the finals. Jason You and Dana Underwood also finished first for the Matadors, and Linc Atkinson and Brittney Reynolds were each league champions for the Mustangs.

And while Fremont finished last in both the boys and girls team polls at the finals, not all of the Firebirds were lagging behind. Matt Barkley and Kelly Bushnell each won individual titles in the shot put for Fremont.

Kritzer and Faules were by far the local stars, though.

Kritzer took the long jump with a lead of 20-8.25, and he came back to win the triple jump with a 42-6.25 effort. Kritzer was also second in the high jump at 5-10 with teammate Patrick Lee, a freshman, third at 5-6.

Yow supported Kritzer's effort with a win in the 3,200 meters in 10:02.15. He was also second in the 1,600 meters in 4:36.0.

Faules led the Homestead effort, running to a win in the 300 hurdles in 40.80 and to a first in the 110 hurdles in 14.89.

Atkinson joined Faules on the victory stand with a first in the discus with a toss of 126-8. Atkinson was fourth in the shot put at 45-0.5 with teammates Steve Kenney fifth at 40-8.5. Kenney was sixth in the discus at 116-2. Eddie Sumpter joined in with thirds in the triple jump at 39-2 and the 200 meters in 23.36.

Fremont's Barkley was another local winner. The powerful Firebird won the shot put with a heave of 53-9.

Trevor Fontes was fourth in the discus for the Firebirds with a toss of 119-3. Austin Sardella was third in the 800 meters in 2:04.68 and Devin Diaz was fifth in the high jump at 5-2 to round out the list of Fremont placers.

Underwood, Reynolds and Bushnell took top honors in girls competition the same day.

Underwood cruised to a win in the 800 meters for the Matadors. Her winning time of 2:23.66 was more than five seconds faster than her nearest rival. She was also fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:29.53.

Reynolds soared to a first in the long jump at 17-5. The senior also ran second in the 200 meters in 27.28. She topped a list of Homestead placers that also included Sandra Kiel, fifth in the discus (88-1); Rebecca Boyle, fifth in the 3,200 (12:25.43); and Megan Brady, fifth in the 300 hurdles (52.35).

Bushnell was the only Fremont placer in the girls finals, but her finish was impressive indeed. The sophomore won the shot put with a heave of 111-3.
