Monta Vista's Lee wins badminton title
By Eric Fontes
The Central Coast Section boys' singles badminton championship turned out to be a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League showdown between Saratoga's Mike Chen and Monta Vista's Ivan Lee.

Lee defeated Yerba Buena's Vu Tran, Silver Creek's Johnny Chieng and No. 2 seed Jonathon Pun of Mills to grab a spot in the finals. Chen entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and was rewarded with a first-round bye. He won just two matches over Erick Lim of Westmoor and San Jose's Hai Tran to reach the championship.

But it was Lee who triumphed over Chen in the final, completing his string of upsets.

Monta Vista's An Ly made an impressive run through the girls' singles tournament. Ly won her first two matches before falling to No. 2 seed Daphne Ng of El Camino, but bounced back with two more victories to win the consolation bracket. Cupertino's Tiffany Chu defeated Tiffany Tran of Mt. Pleasant in the opening round of the tournament before losing to Ng as well. Chu responded by winning two matches and reaching the semi-finals of the consolation bracket.

The girls' doubles tournament saw its share of local representation from Willow Glen's duo of Nancy Huyen Vu and Hang Nguyen, Saratoga's Sophia Law and Vicki Liu, and Lynbrook's Sandy Chang and Julie Cheng.

The Saratoga duo advanced the farthest with three victories, including upsetting the No. 2 seeded Palo Alto doubles. Law and Liu settled for second after losing to Milpitas' Chau Le and Helen Page in the championship match. The duos from Lynbrook and Willow Glen each won their opening matches before being relegated to the consolation bracket.

In the boys' doubles tournament, Lynbrook's Warren Lou and Jerry Wang pulled off several surprising victories, including an upset over the No. 2 seed team of Josh Lin and Mike Yen from Gunn. The unranked team from Lynbrook was eventually ousted by Mountain View's Brian Chiu and Tri Tang in the semi-finals.

Willow Glen's Tue Tran and Long Nguyen and Del Mar's Tuan Vu and Toan Le each dropped their opening matches, moving them to the consolation bracket. Del Mar's duo proceeded to beat the Willow Glen doubles team in their consolation bracket showdown.

All three local duos in the mixed doubles tournament won at least three matches in either the regular or consolation bracket.

Cupertino's Thomas Chung and Link Banh won their first match against Yerba Buena. Fremont's Tony Nguyen and Diana Ngo followed suit and defeated South San Francisco. However, both teams lost in the next round. Lynbrook's Ryan Aralar and Cindy Hing one-upped the others with victories over Live Oak and Independence.

In the consolation bracket, Cupertino and Fremont won two matches before enduring their second losses. Lynbrook's Aralar and Hing went on to win the consolation bracket with victories over Fremont and Andrew Hill.

Tulowitzki returns

Long Beach State's Troy Tulowitzki enjoyed a mini homecoming trip when his team traveled to Palo Alto to play Stanford in the College Baseball Super Regionals last weekend. Just last year, the 49ers' starting shortstop was playing ball for the Fremont Firebirds.

The 2002 Fremont graduate played varsity baseball for four years, while leading the Firebirds to Central Coast Section playoff appearances in 2001 and 2002. Tulowitzki was selected twice to the All-State second team, received three team MVP awards and batted above .500 in his final two years at Fremont. He also starred on the basketball court, leading his team to two league championships and ranking third in scoring in the state during his senior year.

Tulowitzki received a baseball scholarship to play for Long Beach and is already producing for the No. 6 ranked 49ers as a freshman. Going into last weekend, Tulowitzki had started 48 games, carried a .265 batting average and led the team with 43 RBIs.
