School district postpones layoff decisions
By Pallavi Somusetty
Though the funding cuts coming from the state are sure to be severe, the Sunnyvale School District has agreed to postpone any layoff decisions until September. On June 19 the school board voted in the 200304 budget, which included several cuts to different departments, but layoffs were not on the plate.

The cuts in the budget are based on the latest information available from the state, though the state budget isn't expected to be finalized until September. "We have no clue right now what the state's going to give us," said Linda Kilian, school board president. Until the state provides that information, the district is hesitant to cut jobs, Kilian said.

The board passed a resolution that would allow them to lay off classified employees in the fall if necessary.

Since the adopted budget doesn't lay off employees, it has a discrepancy of $1.3 million that needs to be balanced in the fall when the state budget is finalized. But the district might have more revenue coming its way, as the final end figures come in and the property tax revenues are determined.

The district has 45 days after the state budget is approved to make the necessary changes.
