The old baseball adage "good pitching will beat good hitting every time" was challenged on July 3—and it was the Campbell Little League major division all-stars who were proving the old theory wrong.
Oh, there was good pitching when Campbell and Sunnvyale Southern squared off in the District 44 major division all-star game at Cupertino National's diamond at Kennedy Middle School. But it was the Campbell hitters playing the starring role in their 7-1 win over Southern.
Abe Matsui led the way as Campbell blasted 11 hits on the road to its third straight win of the tournament.
Campbell had opened by blanking Santa Clara Westside 3-0, then edged Cupertino American 3-2 before rolling over Southern on the day before the Fourth of July.
The fireworks started early for Campbell. Matsui doubled and singled twice to lead the display for the Campbell kids. Cory Jacobson doubled twice for the winners and Chase Volgena singled and doubled.
Connor Bernarding and Cory Jacobson each ripped a pair of hits and James Weimer and Patrick Moniz each doubled. No Campbell hitter struck out in the game.
Tom McCoy singled and doubled to lead Southern. Joey Austin doubled and Mikey Lowton had two hits in the loss.
Patrick Downey did it all for Moreland in a 12-6 win over Cupertino National the same day. Downey allowed four hits and struck out six in five innings to get the pitching for Moreland, and he was also 4 for 4 at the plate with a home run and a double, driving in five runs for his club.
It was a slugfest for three innings. Downey's run-scoring double sparked a three-run first for Moreland, and his three-run homer keyed a four-run second.
But Chase Hayhurst singled home a run to help Cupertino National to a two-run rally in the top of the second, and National added three in the top of the third when Nick Tong was hit by a pitch, Justin Rahn singled and Mitchell Plank belted a three-run homer.
Moreland picked up two in the bottom of the third, though, then scored two in the fourth and one more in the fifth to win it.
Downey led Moreland with his four hits and Kenny Pope and Kevin Roeder each doubled.
Mike Appio flipped a complete game to lead Sunnyvale Metro to an 8-3 win over Sunnyvale National on July 2. Metro trailed 3-1 heading into the final inning, but rallied for seven runs in the top of the sixth to win it.
James Roberts tossed a gem to lead Tri-Cities to a 6-1 win over Sunnyvale Serra. Roberts went the distance to fire a 1-hitter, striking out 13 in the win. He took a no-hit, no-run game into the sixth inning before a run-scoring single by Serra ended his bid for the no-hitter.
Roberts helped his own cause at the plate with a double.
Metro's Appio and Sunnyvale Serra' A.J. Puziol locked up in a real pitcher's duel in first-round action. The hurlers were throwing zeroes through five innings before Metro scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a thrilling 1-0 victory.
There were two outs in the sixth when Mike Marcellini singled up the middle. Appio followed with a double to the fence to score Marcellini with the game's only run.
Appio nailed the mound win, tossing a 1-hitter and striking out nine. Puziol was the hard-luck loser, finishing with a 5-hitter and fanning seven. Neither pitcher walked a batter in the well-pitched game.
Sunnyvale Southern blanked Tri-Cities 10-0 in another first-round game. Thomas McGeoy went five innings to get the win. McGeoy, Sterling North and Robbie Chin each doubled for Southern.
Minor Division
Jarod Dinges tossed a 3-hitter and Calvin Nuti-Vanvorst ripped three hits and scored three runs to lead Sunnyvale Metro to a lopsided 12-2 minor division win over Los Altos #2.
Metro took the early lead when Steven Gonsalves singled and Mike Hauan doubled to open the first. After two walks pushed in a run, Jordan Dieck ripped a two-run single to make it 3-0 and Metro led the rest of the way on the road to the win.
Jack Bigham also singled home a couple of runs for the winners.
Dinges finished with six strikeouts.
Serra rolled to an 11-1 win over Campbell earlier in the week. Kevin Boudinot allowed just six hits and struck out five in four innings of work to get the win. Serra unloaded for four runs in the third and seven in the fourth to clinch the victory.
Brandon Willard went the distance to flip a 7-hitter for Moreland in a 12-5 win over Sunnyvale National. Willard struck out seven. Ifani Mapa roped a double for National.
Sunnyvale Metro scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 5-4 win over rival Sunnyvale Serra. Dinges fired a 3-hitter for the win, striking out five. Gonsalves doubled in the game for Metro and Kevin Boudinot ripped a two-bagger for Serra.
Junior Division
Aaron Headrick ripped three hits and Jimmy Trask threw five strong innings to lead Tri-Cities to a rousing 12-2 win over Sunnyvale Serra in the junior division tournament.
Headrick belted three of Tri-Cities' eight hits in the win and Trask allowed just seven hits and struck out four over five innings to get the mound win.
Brian Labadie doubled and singled for Serra and Kevin Knopf came through with a key defensive play, pulling off a hidden ball trick at third base.
John Austin went the distance to toss a 7-hitter, striking out nine along the way, to lead Sunnyvale Southern to an 11-3 win over Cupertino National. Austin also led the offense with a pair of doubles, and teammates Kevin Conti and Craig Darknell also doubled.
Junior TOC
The Sunnyvale Serra Mets beat the Los Altos A's 9-3 in the finals to win the championship in the District 44 junior division Tournament of Champions.
