Last week Michael Glass, a 62-year-old Sunnyvale man, was riding his bicycle when he collided with a garbage truck at the corner of Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and Remington Drive. He died a short time later.
Now the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is seeking witnesses to the accident, which occurred at 9:01 a.m. on July 22. "All we have is a statement from the driver of the truck. Not to impugn what the driver said, but we need more information," said John Pilger, the city's communications officer.
"That intersection is extremely busy at that time of morning. We know someone must have seen what happened, and we're hoping they will come forward," said Pilger.
The accident occurred in front of a gas station and across from a Chinese restaurant but no one at either place admits to witnessing the accident.
"None of the security cameras in the area were aimed at a place where we could see the accident," said Pilger.
The truck driver is an employee of Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling, the
city's contracted garbage collector. The company issued a statement regarding the accident but would not comment on the details of the incident.
"The company is deeply saddened by this tragic accident and extend our condolences to the victim's family and friends. We are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation of the matter and are undertaking our own investigation," the statement said.
Glass was taken to Valley Medical Center, where he died in surgery a short time later.
The public safety department's Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact traffic officer Anthony Tani or Lt. Walter Lee at 408.730.7110.
