The deadline to file to run for one of the four open city council seats in the November election is Aug. 8. A candidate must be a registered voter in Sunnyvale and may begin the application process by filing a candidate intention statement with the Sunnyvale city clerk in order to become a candidate.
Once a person has filed an intention statement, the city clerk will issue application papers and a candidate orientation packet. The completed papers must be filed with the Sunnyvale city clerk by 5 p.m. on Aug. 8.
There will be no extension this year because incumbent Tim Risch has filed to run again for his seat.
When filing for candidacy, applicants must specify which of the seven seats they are running for. With incumbents Pat Vorreiter, Jack Walker and Manuel Valerio reaching term limits, seats four, five and six are open; and the first term for seat seven—incumbent Tim Risch's seat—is expiring, allowing other candidates to run for this seat.
Candidates are elected for a four-year term and may then run for one additional four-year term.
For information call the Sunnyvale city clerk's office at 408.730.7483.
