Eight candidates compete for 4 seats
Eight Sunnyvale residents are officially running for four city council seats in November.

The terms of Vice Mayor Tim Risch and Council members Manuel Valerio, Pat Vorreiter and Jack Walker end in November. Because of term limits, only Risch is eligible to run again for seat 7. Running against him is Melinda Hamilton, president of the Friends of Sunnyvale.

Housing commissioner Pete Richards is running against planning commissioner Dean Chu for seat 4. Planning Commissioner Otto Lee is running against James C. Fussell for seat 5. Planning Commissioner Ron Swegles is running for seat 6 against Michael Flores, who lost against Mayor Julia Miller in 2001.

Mayor Julia Miller and council members Fred Fowler and John Howe will retain their seats for the next two years.

In the Sunnyvale School District Board election, three of the five seats will be vacated. The terms of Nancy Newkirk, Jessica Lee and appointed board member Phyllis Fowler will end in November.

Only four people—Phyllis Fowler, Jeff Arnett, Nancy Mc Caa and Nancy Newkirk have filed papers.

The deadline is extended to Aug. 13 because Lee decided not to run for reelection.
