Changes possible to the downtown plan
There might be some changes to the city's downtown plan, which was approved on June 17 amid much controversy.
At a recent Sunnyvale city council meeting, the council approved a General Plan amendment study to consider increasing the number of residential units on the Town Center Mall property by 100 units and office space by 98,000 square feet.
The current downtown plan allows for 200 residential units, 202,000 square feet of office space and 1,007,876 square feet of retail commercial space on the property.
At the request of the Forum Development Group, the mall property's prospective owners, city staff will now look into the impacts from the additional square footage and units. Many residents expressed concern about the additional development density at the city council meeting.
The vote to initiate the study passed 4-3, with Mayor Julia Miller and councilmen Fred Fowler and John Howe dissenting.
