There's some rebuilding to do in the football program at Lynbrook High School after the Vikings won just a pair of games a year ago. But head coach Shawn Hook returns this fall to continue the process at Lynbrook—and he has a handful of returning lettermen who could make the project successful.
With speedster Austin Fong (5-foot-8, 160 pounds) returning to the backfield and big Ryan Dormishian (6-foot-2, 270) back in the line, the Vikings show promise this season as they compete in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Fong is back for his junior season as a Lynbrook running back, and he's joined in the backfield by Johnny Huizar (5-foot-9, 160), who played varsity a year ago as a sophomore.
Senior Steve Yi (6-foot, 180) is a varsity returner who will switch from running back to quarterback this fall, and one of his favorite targets figures to be senior tight end Akeel Quershi (5-foot-9, 185), another letterman. Junior Michael Thurman is another top Lynbrook prospect at quarterback.
Dormishian, another junior, will lead the charge up front in the offensive line along with junior lettermen Jason Kaye (6-foot, 205) and Josh Fredkin (5-foot-7, 215).
Many of the players on the Lynbrook offensive unit will serve double-duty as defensive starters. Fong, Huizar, Yi and Fredkin are all linebackers for the Vikings, and Dormishian and Kaye are two-way linemen. Quershi will start at defensive end for the Vikes.
Fong, Huizar, Dormishian and Kaye were all sophomore starters for Hook's Vikings last year, and they return to the field this fall to help the coach with his rebuilding program.
Lynbrook will be out to improve on its 2-8 finish of a year ago when it opens the season on Sept. 12, 7 p.m., against Branham at Cupertino. The Vikings will open the El Camino Division season at Cupertino on Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m., against the Pioneers. Cupertino figures to be among the title favorites in the division this season, along with Saratoga and Fremont.
