On August 1, 2003 Dyana Klein's new Sunnyvale business went to the dogs, literally.
Klein opened her Run 'Em Ragged dog daycare/boarding business out of necessity. She didn't like leaving her Miniature Pincher, Max, alone all day when she went to work. "Max would cry and become very anxious," she says. So she started taking him to a dog just day care.
After doing some research on the dog daycare business, Klein decided to open one of her own.
But Klein's thinking was a little bigger than day care.
"I didn't want to have the regular doggie daycare. I wanted to have more of a cross between a dog spa and a day camp. Somewhere owners could bring their dogs and have everything in one location," Klein said.
"RER offers grooming, daycare, boarding and training all on the premises," Klein said.
RER's groomer, Valerie Madar, started grooming in Queens, New York at one of the top grooming schools there. "I've traveled across the United States and learned a lot of different techniques from each stop I've made. Now I can tailor grooming not only to the owners, but to the dogs liking as well," Madar said.
And for those dog owners who travel for business or pleasure, RER offers boarding with three outdoor play areas of over 2,000 square feet each. The dogs are separated by size, Klein says, so that everyone is safe with a section older or less active dogs, and each compound is supervised by staff.
"Owners like to feel that they are providing the best possible care for their dogs, just like they do for children. That's what we're here for."
Run 'Em Ragged is located at 1249 Birchwood Drive and is open 24 hours, 7 days a week for daycare and boarding.
