Sunnyvale women win national tennis title

For a talented group of tennis players from Sunnyvale, getting the national championships wasn't quite enough--they were determined to win the national championship.

And that's just what they did. The Sunnyvale squad won the women's 3.0 adult national championship with a 3-2 win in the finals over El Paso, Texas.

Sunnyvale, representing the USTA Northern California Section, knocked off Little Rock, Ark., 3-2 in the semifinals to earn its place in the title match against El Paso at the tournament played at Randolph Park in Tucson, Ariz. The locals had finished first in their flight in the first two days of the tourney to advance to the final four.

Members of the championship team include Kathryn Nichols (captain), Kristy Hsiao (co-captain), Janet Lum, Desa Bubnovich, Barbara Dreblow, Fran Fuller, Cherisse Thomas, Denise Kato, Teresa Thruong, Nella Hattori and Eve Brasfield.

Mustangs win

Kelly Cefalu finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Homestead girls field hockey team to a lopsided 5-0 non-league victory over Berkeley last week.

Cefalu and Mariko Caster each scored unassisted goals in the first half to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Nicole Caballero scored unassisted 1:15 into the second half to make it 3-0 before Flavia Garcia scored off of assists from Cefalu and Shaida Johnson.

Melanie Gularte capped the scoring with a goal 20:17 into the second half.

Homestead evened its record at 1-1 with the victory.
