SVCN launches its eighth paper—in Almaden Valley
By Allison Rost
Silicon Valley Community Newspapers launches the Almaden Resident, the company's eighth weekly community newspaper, on Oct. 16. The paper will be delivered to virtually every home and business in the Almaden Valley.

In addition to the new Almaden paper, SVCN publishes the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, the Saratoga News, the Cupertino Courier, the Sunnyvale Sun, the Campbell Reporter, the Willow Glen Resident and the Rose Garden Resident, which debuted in May of this year.

As with the other SVCN newspapers, the Almaden Resident will follow the company's successful model of fiercely local news coverage and reasonably priced advertising rates for local businesses. "With weekly newspapers in three strongly defined San Jose neighborhoods," says SVCN Publisher/CEO David Cohen, "we intend to take a close look at issues in the city just as we do in our other community papers."

Cohen notes: "Almaden is a perfect neighborhood for our brand of community journalism. It's a clearly defined community whose residents are well-educated and interested in local schools and issues. What's more," he adds, "the new paper opens up one more channel for targeted marketing in an area with the kind of demographics that appeal to our advertisers."

Greg Watkins, a seasoned editor with more than 13 years experience in community journalism, has been named editor of the new paper. Most recently, he was copy desk chief at the San Mateo County Times. Prior to that he was managing editor of the Independent Newspaper Group in San Mateo County. Watkins is also editing the Rose Garden Resident.

The Almaden Resident logo was created by noted graphics designer Rick Tharp, who heads up Tharp Did It, the Los Gatos-based design studio that has created identity graphics for Le Boulanger bakeries, San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, VTA, Old Town Los Gatos, Steamer's restaurant in Los Gatos and many other businesses. Tharp has a long relationship with SVCN, having designed several of the company's newspaper logos, including the SVCN logo.

In addition to its eight community newspapers, SVCN also publishes City Times, a legal newspaper. The combined circulation of SVCN's community newspapers is now 137,000, with a readership of more than 300,000.

SVCN, at one time a part of Metro Newspapers, became a completely independent company in December 2001 when Cohen bought out his business partners and became the principal owner and publisher/CEO of SVCN, LLC. The company has its headquarters at 1095 The Alameda in San Jose. There is also an office in Los Gatos that houses the staffs of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times and the Saratoga News. The company employs some 65 people.
