On Nov. 1, nine daring individuals set out from Sunnyvale on an adventure straight out of a reality-television show. But these travelers aren't competing for a cash prize; they're journeying around the world to raise money for research.
The Parkinson's Institute at 1170 Morse Ave. in Sunnyvale will be the sole beneficiary of "A Drive Around the World," a road trip raising funds for research of the neurological disease. The trek will take participants down through South America, then up through Asia by way of Australia and across the Bering Strait to Alaska before concluding in Sunnyvale next August.
The six donated Land Rovers they will travel in will also serve as a portable research laboratory from which the group will link up with classrooms back home. The Land Rovers will be shipped by boat across the ocean.
Sponsors have also pledged up to a nickel for each of the trip's 50,000 kilometers. Celebrities such as Michael J. Fox will likely join up for the drive's last leg leading into Sunnyvale next year.
