Grelli covered the 2.95­mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont in 17:55 to win the CCS Division III championship. In the process, the talented senior star posted the best girls time of the day.

Follmar gave Grelli a run for her money, finishing 18 seconds back in 18:13. Her time was also better than any time recorded in girls competition at CCS.

While Grelli set the pace for the day with her 17:55, Marie Nguyen of Milpitas won Division I in 18:26, Tori Tyler of Gunn took Division II in 18:44, Stephanie Hamilton of San Lorenzo Valley was tops in Division IV in 18:59 and Tomi Amos of Castilleja was first in Division V in 18:53.

In boys competition, Jeremy Mineau of Menlo Atherton set the pace with his Division I­winning time of 15:03. Monta Vista junior Jason Yow was second in the division in 15:30.

Rounding out the list of boys winners were Kyle Shackleton of Carlmont (Division II, 15:35), Nathan Huerta of North Monterey (Division III, 15:39), Alex Dunn of San Lorenzo Valley (Division IV, 15:04) and Jack Welch of Redwood Christian (Division V, 15:30).

Yow led the Monta Vista boys to a team fourth with his second-place effort. San Benito won the Division I title with Salinas second and Watsonville third.

Yow finished 18 seconds ahead of third place Evan Anderson of Menlo Atherton. Junior Matt Paquet was 15th in 16:28 with sophomore Scott Russell 18th in 16:33, junior Elliott Jones 28th in 16:53 and junior Oliver Paxa 44th in 17:20.

The Monta Vista girls, meanwhile, put seven runners in the top 30 to finish second as a team in Division I. Milpitas ran up a low 50 points to take the title with Monta Vista a very close second at 52 and San Benito a distant third at 107.

Senior Dana Underwood led the Matadors by running fifth in 19:15. Freshman Lisa Worsham was hot on her heels in sixth in 19:21.

Freshman Angela Hsu was close behind in 12th in 19:57 with sophomore Stephanie Chan 13th in 19:57, soph Judy Liang 16th in 20:18, senior Jill Blake-Burke 22nd in 20:31 and freshman Carolyn Chuang 27th in 20:40.

Homestead freshman Jill Peanaksy was 20th in Division II in 20:44 and Homestead freshman Rishi Agrawal was 35th in the boys Division II event in 17:20.

Fremont ran 12th as a team in the Division II boys race. Sophomore Kevin Schneider was 43rd in 17:33 with junior Emanuel Cristobal 50th in 17:40.

In girls Division V action, Jessica Butelo was fourth and Monica Monari was fifth to lead The King's Academy to a team second behind Castilleja. Emily Henderson ran eighth to get into the top 10 in the division with Kim Henderson 14th and Kristen McDaniel 19th.

Matt Condie was 11th to lead the King's boys to a team seventh in Division V. Tim Condie was 17th for the Knights.

Girls tennis

The Monta Vista girls tennis team finally ran into an opponent it couldn't handle last week—Mother Nature.

The Matadors lost their Friday match to a rainstorm, but the Mats were scheduled to be back on the court on Monday to play Mills in the CCS quarterfinals. The winner was to advance to the Tuesday semifinals with that winner to play for the CCS title on Nov. 19, 2 p.m., at the Courtside Tennis Club in Los Gatos.

Monta Vista had opened the CCS tourney with a 5-2 win over Homestead. The Matadors, 19-0 for the year, were led by Allie Lipton, whose victory in the No. 1 slot started a singles sweep.

Lipton was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Dina Paikin at No. 1 singles, Jennifer Lu won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Christina Yee won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 and Dana Popescu won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.

Freshmen Vidya Dabir and Jennifer Chui teamed for a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles for the Mats.

The loss brought an end to the season for Homestead. The Mustangs, 13-1 for the year, had opened the playoffs with a 4-3 win over Leland.

Following the team tournament, top singles and doubles players will advance to the CCS tourney beginning Nov. 24 at Courtside.

Lipton, seeded No. 2 in the singles tourney, will open against Nicole Cummings of Monterey, and Monta Vista's Yee and Popescu will meet up with a doubles team from Aptos. Lu is the singles alternate for the CCS tourney and Dabir and Chui are the doubles alternates.

Jennifer Sum and Dana Seifert of Homestead will play in the CCS doubles tournament. They open against Harker Academy on Nov. 24 at Courtside.

Girls volleyball

Homestead lost a tough five-game match to Leigh in the first round of the CCS Division II volleyball playoffs. The Mustangs ended the year with a solid 20-18 record.
