Salvation Army seeks holiday bell ringers

The Salvation Army of Sunnyvale and Mountain View is looking for people to act as bell ringers this holiday season for its Christmas Kettle Campaign.

Since 1893, it has been a Salvation Army tradition for a representative to stand outside stores with a bucket and a bell to collect money, and the army needs volunteers to work this year.

Volunteers will help the Salvation Army meet its goal of raising $57,000 between Nov. 22 and Dec. 24.

The Salvation Army is also accepting applications for paid bell ringers to work the entire season, for which they will earn up to $8.50 an hour.

To volunteer or apply, call the Salvation Army at 408.720.0420, or visit the local office at 1161 South Bernardo Avenue.

Chamber charity auction for agency

The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce hosts a charity auction for Sunnyvale Community Services on Dec. 4 at 5:45 p.m. in the community services building at 725 Kifer Road.

The event, to benefit the Community Christmas Center, will offer almost 200 items in the silent and oral auctions, including two round-trip tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies, a $300 gift certificate to P.F. Chan's Chinese Bistro, dinner for four at a local fire station and a ride in a fire engine, and various signed Giants, Sabercats and 49ers items.

With help from local businesses and agencies, the entire program is provided free of charge to community services. Il Postale, Trader Joe's and the Chamber of Commerce are providing all food and beverages, and many of the prizes have been donated by community members. The event is open to the public.

For admission, community services asks guests to donate a new toy, household gift or can of food.

For more information, call 408.738.0121.
