Fremont, Los Gatos battle in key match
By Mike Barnhart
When the latest Central Coast Section wrestling rankings were published by California Wrestler Magazine last week, Gilroy was ranked No. 1. Ranked right behind Gilroy were Santa Clara Valley Athletic League powers Los Gatos at No. 2 and Fremont at No. 3.

So when the two unbeaten De Anza Division co-leaders square off Feb. 5, 7 p.m., at Fremont, there will be plenty of quality wrestling. Considering that nine Wildcats and seven Firebirds are ranked among the section's top 12 in their various weight classes, many bouts in the dual meet may be previews of match-ups to come at the CCS tournament later in the month.

The Firebirds, who captured the Overfelt Wrestling Classic's team title on Jan. 24, tuned up for Los Gatos last week with a 49-21 win over Saratoga.

Filip Novachkov, top-ranked at 105 but wrestling up at 114 pounds, and seventh-ranked Kurtis Ogasawara (137) each won by fall, leading the Firebirds to their fourth straight SCVAL win. Borislav Novachkov (105), second-ranked Joseph Seo (132) and third-ranked Greg Crane (142) all won by decisions.

Ernest Ancona, ranked third at 215 pounds, won by forfeit, as did Joel Tran, the section's fourth-ranked 125-pounder.

At the Overfelt Classic, F. Novachkov, Crane and Ancona all claimed individual titles and Seo took a second for Fremont.

Homestead on a roll

The Homestead boys soccer team, riding a three-game win streak and in third place with a 6-3 record, visited first-place Lynbrook in a do-or-die SCVAL El Camino Division game last week.

A Lynbrook win would have given the Vikings the El Camino crown and its first berth in the CCS playoffs since 1999. A Homestead victory or a tie would have created all sorts of possibilities.

The most impressive scenario would be a league crown going to the Mustangs, if they could close out with wins over Lynbrook, Milpitas and Monta Vista. Michael Charrier, Craig Moberg and Justin Hall all tallied goals in Homestead's most recent win, 3-0 over Saratoga. Mike Roos, the league's assists leader with four, set up Moberg's goal. Hall and Moberg also had assists for the Mustangs.

Moberg and senior Efran Solorio both scored in a 2-1 win over Cupertino on Jan. 24. Roos had two assists and Brandon one. Keya Ebadat, Charlie Lee, Daniel Hawawini and Jason Anthony also have scored assists or goals during league play for the Mustangs.

Split for Mustangs

Sparked by Katie Wilcox and Katie Kimure, Homestead blanked visiting Cupertino 4-0 in an SCVAL DeAnza Division game Friday. Wilcox and Kimure combined for two goals and three assists, helping the Mustangs improve their division record to 3-4-2.

Homestead dropped a 5-3 decision three days earlier at Saratoga opened the scoring after taking a pass from Jenny Pham.
