Hu an All-American

Former Homestead High School soccer standout An-Yen Hu's decorated collegiate career culminated recently with his selection to two All-American teams, one for his athletic ability and the other for his academic prowess.

Hu, a four-year starter for Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, Calif., was one of three defenders picked to the 12-man NCAA Division III Men's All-American first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Hu also was one of 12 players picked to the NSCAA's 2003 Scholar All-America First Team. Hu has worked for a 3.76 grade point average while majoring in economics and politics.

"It's nice to get some recognition for all my hard work," said Hu, who was raised in Sunnyvale and attended Cupertino Junior High School before moving onto Homestead.

This year Hu anchored a defense that allowed just 16 goals in 19 games. His Pomona-Pitzer team had a 15-4 overall record, including a 10-4 mark in conference play and a third-place finish. Hu was selected to the all-conference first team for the third straight year. After gaining second-team all-conference honors as a freshman in the fall of 2000, the post-season honors got better each year. He was tabbed to the NSCAA's All-Far West third team as a sophomore and to the All-American third team as a junior.
