Novachkov the best

Sophomore Filip Novachkov topped a list of six Fremont wrestlers to win individual titles on Feb. 14 at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals held at Los Altos High School.

Novachkov not only won the title at 103 pounds, he was selected as the tournament's outstanding wrestler in the lower weights.

Joel Tran at 125, Joseph Seo at 130, Kurtis Ogasawara at 135, Greg Crane at 140 and Ernesto Ancona at 215 were other Fremont wrestlers to win championships.

The group--that also includes Tommy Staats and Edgar Mazariegos--will now head to the Central Coast Section wrestling championships to be held Feb. 20­21 at Independence High School in East San Jose.

Homestead's Ittai Barzilay and Mark Zosky also won league titles at the SCVAL tournament. Barzilay won the crown at 145 pounds and Zosky took the title at 171.

In SCVAL dual match action last week, Fremont edged Palo Alto 40-33 to finish 5-1 in the De Anza Division. Los Gatos won the title with a 6-0 record, then outscored the Firebirds 254.5-172 at the league tournament.

Pins by Tran at 130, Crane at 145 and Staats at 189 sparked the Firebirds to the win over the Vikings. Decision wins went to Borislav Novachkov at 103, F. Novachkov at 112, Ogasawara at 140 and Austin Hill at 215. Seo won by forfeit at 135.

Lakewood Pony

The Lakewood Pony Baseball, a coed instructional baseball league in

Sunnyvale that stresses fun, will hold tryouts for the 2004 season on Feb. 21, 10 a.m., at Lakewood Park in Sunnyvale. The league is open to players ages 5-12. Register online, or Saturdays from 10 a.m.­2 p.m. at Lakewood Park through March 13. For more information,call 866.895.9841.
