Novachkov fourth

Fremont sophomore Filip Novachkov finished fourth at 105 pounds at the prestigious state high school wrestling tournament held March 5­6 in Bakersfield.

Novachkov lost a 7-5 heartbreaker in overtime, but posted five wins before losing 13-5 in the third-place match.

The Central Coast Section champ won back-to-back decisions, 10-5 and 10-0, on Friday to advance to the second day of the competition. He opened on Saturday with a technical fall and a pin in 1:58 of the first round before winning 15-5 to advance to the third-place bout.

Fremont's Greg Crane and Ernesto Ancona also made it to the second day of the tourney before getting eliminated.

Crane, also a CCS champ, pinned with 35 seconds in the third round and won 7-3 the first day at 142 pounds, before losing 14-3. The sophomore lost his first match on Saturday 4-0 to fall out of the tourney.

Ancona, a senior who was third at CCS, lost 5-3 on the first day while also posting a couple of first-round pins in 1:17 and 42 seconds. He won again on Saturday 11-7, but lost by fall in his final match to drop out of the competition.

Fremont senior Joseph Seo lost two straight matches at state.

Bronco baseball

The Santa Clara University baseball program will host a Youth Spring Break Camp for players ages 5­12 at Bellomy Field on the Bronco campus. Sessions will be held April 5­7 and April 12­14, 9 a.m. to noon each day. The cost is $125 for each session.
