Some 2,000 people gathered at Flint Center on March 13 to pay tribute to Indian spiritual leader, Pandurang Shashtri Athavale, known to his followers as Dadaji. Athavale died at age 83 on Oct. 25 last year in India. His daughter has been carrying a small casket with Athavale's ashes around the world so her father's followers can pay tribute to their leader. Cupertino Mayor Sandra James, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown and mayors from several surrounding cities joined in the tribute at Flint Center. In 1947, Athavale started the Swadhyay Parivar sect that believes in selfless love and universal brotherhood under the fatherhood of God.
