Experience will be on the side of The King's Academy boys volleyball team this spring. In fact, coach Dan Luna believes the Knights can go the distance in the Private Schools Athletic League.
"We have the talent to go at least 10-2, possibly 12-0," says Luna, in his fourth season as head coach of the Knights. "It really depends on the attitude of the team."
"We have two seniors returning for their fourth seasons and four juniors returning for their third seasons," Luna explains why he believes King's will improve on its 2003 league mark of 9-3.
Four of the Knights' six starters were all-league performers last season.
Chris Chown and Tim Yordan, both outside hitters, are the fourth-year players the Knights count on to provide the bulk of the kill shots. Chown has been named all-PSAL in each of his first three seasons. Yordan was all-league in each of the past two years.
Chown, at 6-foot-2, often dominates games, as he did in the Knights' first two league matches. In a three-game sweep at Valley Christian of Dublin on March 16, Chown led the way with 12 kills.
Three days later, in a home match against Redwood Christian, Chown put away 13 more kills in another three-game sweep.
Yordan, at 5-foot-9, is not as dominant has Chown, but he can be just as effective. In a non-league victory over Crystal Springs of Upland on March 9, Yordan sparked the Knights with 10 kills.
Two juniors, 5-foot-10 setter Devon Luna and 6-foot-4 middle blocker Kyle Tompane, also were all-league performers in 2003. Sam Sereda, a 5-foot-11 setter, and Thomas Darnell, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, join Luna and Tompane as juniors beginning their third season. Another returning player is junior Micah Miller, a 5-foot-5 defensive specialist.
First-year players include 6-foot-1 senior Steve Parker, 5-foot-8 sophomore Nathan Yi, and three freshmen, Colin Foshay, Steven Lim and Sam Sussman.
