The Fremont softball team needed a change of pace.

After winning a pair of 1-0 shutouts, one in its league opener and another in the Charlie Miguel tournament, and then losing 5-0 in another tourney game, the Firebirds put on their hitting shoes.

Led by the bats of seniors Ally Lang and Jessica Moore, Fremont rapped out 14 hits and scored 11 runs against Gunn in Palo Alto on March 23. And the Firebirds needed every one of those runs in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division contest, because the Titans scored 10.

The 11-10 triumph improved Fremont's league record to 2-0 and evened its overall mark at 4-4.

Moore singled, doubled and drove in two runs for the Firebirds. Lang also had two hits, including a triple. Clara Lopez was the winning pitcher, but she probably was happier with her effort in the Firebirds' league opener the previous week.

In a game against Saratoga on March 18, Lopez fired a 1-hitter, outdueling Saratoga pitching ace Nikki Franchi. Fremont managed four hits against Franchi, who had spun back-to-back no-hitters earlier in the season.

One of the Fremont hits was Adriana Carbajal's game-winning single.

Lopez produced another shutout in the Miguel tourney, 1-0 against Willow Glen. Shalainie Manuel's triple was the big hit in that game.

Mustangs swim to win

Junior Amber Hovey won two events and helped the Homestead girls swimming team take two of the three relays in a 99-85 victory over visiting Monta Vista on March 25.

The Homestead girls improved their De Anza Division record to 3-0. Meanwhile, the boys raised their league mark to 2-1 with a 98-86 win over the Matadors.

Hovey won the 100-meter butterfly in 57.39 and the 100 backstroke in 59.46. She joined Alicia Chapman, Michelle Camburn and Jackie Laird in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.25. Hovey teamed with Catherine Kung, Jessica Lee and Laird to win the 200 medley relay in 1:55.73.

Jessica Schwiesow and Chapman went one-two in the 50 free, Schwiesow's 26.97 time edging Chapman's 27.07.

Kung won the 100 free in 58.66 and Lee led a Homestead sweep in the 100 breaststroke. Lee finished in 1:12.67.

Mat Schmidt, Brian Bucher and Andrew Sun were double winners for Homestead.

Schmidt captured the 200 individual medley in 2:02.09 and the 100 breast in 1:01:13. Bucher won the 100 free in 52.37 and the 50 free in 23.09. The senior speedster also placed second to Sun in the 200 free. Sun won in 1:54.04, while Bucher swam 1:54.40. Sun also won the 100 back in 1:00.03.

Karta Khalsa won the 100 butterfly in 54.60.
